UC Berkeley Police Chief Robbed of Gun, Ammo, Badge

The weekend before last, UC Berkeley Police Chief Margo Bennett parked her unmarked car in East Bay Regional Parks, exited the vehicle to go jogging, and returned to find a window knocked out and her gun, ammunition, badge, ID card, laptop, cell phone, and jewelry missing.

The handgun was a loaded Sig Sauer P239–a popular pistol for law enforcement that can be chambered in 9mm, .40 caliber, or .357 Sig.

The Daily Californian reports that the burglary occurred around 8 a.m. Bennett reported it at around 8:30.

According to Inside Bay Area, the UC Berkeley Police Department would not answer questions dealing with the burglary. And it is “unclear whether Bennett was on duty” and “whether she was following protocol when she left her gun, ammunition and department laptop in her locked vehicle.”

East Bay Regional Parks spokeswoman Carolyn Jones said, “It’s obviously a terrible thing. No one wants to go to the park, enjoy themselves and find their windows smashed. It underscores the risks and nature of the problem.”

Bennett has over “35 years of law enforcement experience” and she became of UC Berkeley Police Department in 2013.

Police have not clarified what kind of information might have stored on the laptop nor have reports indicated whether Bennett’s badge or ID have been used since the burglary.
