A famous Afghan female singer and television personality, Aryana Sayeed, recently posted a video on Facebook showing herself setting a dress that sparked criticism among some Islamic hardliners on fire.

“Aryana was forced to take the step after attracting criticisms online, specifically on social media,” reports Afghanistan Khaama Press (KP).

The news outlet quotes the singer as saying the motive behind burning the dress is “’to attract the attention of the Afghan people to some of the critical issues,’ including violence against women, sexual abuse of boys, and forced marriages,” adds the news outlet.

“If you think that the only problem in Afghanistan is this dress, I will set this on fire today because of you,” said the singer on social media.

“It should be noted that the reason for this action of mine is not the pressure of those who still live in dark ages but to raise further awareness in regards to important issues within our society,” she added.

On Wednesday, she reportedly posted a video on Facebook of herself setting the dress ablaze.

The video has received hundreds of thousands of views and elicited thousands of comments.

“She should have burnt the dirty mouth of the people who unfairly criticized her,” BBC quotes one of her fans as saying on social media. “Burning the dress was not good work.”

Muslim hardliners accuse the singer of ignoring traditional Islamic values by wearing the dress during a concert.

The dress covers Aryana’s entire body. However, “the critics were obviously nervous with the color of the dress which was resembling to [sic] body color,” notes KP.

“The controversial tight dress, which she wore at a concert in Paris on 13 May, sparked condemnation from religious figures and on social media, with several people saying it was against Afghan culture and non-Islamic,” reports BBC.

“Ms Sayeed is well known in Afghanistan as a singer, songwriter and TV personality who sings pop, hip-hop and Afghan songs. She’s also a judge on the Afghan version of The Voice talent show, which is aired by Kabul-based Tolo TV,” it later adds.
