May 24 (UPI) — Clerks actress Lisa Spoonauer recently died at age 44.

TMZ reported Wednesday that Spoonauer died at her home in New Jersey. The actress’ cause of death has yet to be revealed, although sources said Spoonauer wasn’t breathing when police arrived at her home Saturday night.

Clerks director Kevin Smith paid tribute to the actress Tuesday on Instagram after Spoonauer, who played Caitlin Bree in the 1994 cult classic, died Saturday.

“Devastated to report that #LisaSpoonauer, who played Caitlin in #clerks, has passed away. In 1992, I went looking for Lisa without knowing either who she was or the integral role she’d play in my life,” Smith wrote before recounting the casting process.

“Lisa quickly became one of the most important people I’d ever meet when she joined Brian [O’Halloran], #JeffAnderson, Marilyn [Ghigliotti], @jaymewes, @samosier, @davidkleinasc and me and one of the chief architects of my first film,” he added.

“My heart goes out to Tom, Mia and Lisa’s family,” the director said, referencing Spoonauer’s husband and daughter. “Thank you for dreaming my dream with me. You changed my life, Lisa.”

In addition to Clerks, Spoonauer appeared in the 1997 movie Bartender starring Robert Zameroski. She later voiced Lisa in a February 2001 episode of the Clerks animated TV series.
