Former Ohio State University star Nick Swisher has signed a four-year contract with his hometown Cleveland Indians, according to the Major League Baseball team.
Boston, Texas and Seattle were also in the running to sign Swisher, who spent the past four seasons with the New York Yankees.
“We wanted to go somewhere where we were going to be wanted and loved, and the Indians showed that,” Swisher said on Thursday. “I couldn’t be more honored to play for my hometown team and I’m just ready to get going.”
The 32-year-old Swisher helped New York to its last World Series title in 2009. He batted .272 with 24 homers and 93 runs batted in last season.
Swisher is a career .256 hitter with 209 homers and 673 RBIs.
He is one of three American League players, along with Paul Konerko and David Ortiz, to hit at least 20 home runs in each of the last eight full Major League seasons.
