Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne has warned his Conservative party that it could lose the next general election unless it softened its stance on gay marriage, the Times reported Tuesday.
Osborne highlighted Barack Obama’s victory in the US presidential election as proof that voters were increasingly turned off by hardline stances on social issues.
“I wouldn’t change the current abortion laws and I strongly support gay marriage on principle,” he wrote in the Times.
“I am proud to be part of a government that will introduce a bill to allow gay marriage.
“It is worth reflecting that in Britain, as America, a clear majority of the public support gay marriage, and an even bigger majority of women support it,” he added.
