The 2012 Olympic media centre will become a broadcasting hub for a new British sports TV channel next year, it was announced Thursday.
The centre, in London’s Olympic Park, will serve as the production base for BT’s new channel broadcasting English Premier League matches from next season.
BT, the UK telecommunications giants, has agreed a 10-year lease for the centre, the London mayor’s ofice confirmed.
But the deal is still subject to approval from the board of the London Legacy Development Corporation, charged with securing the future use of facilities, including the Olympic Stadium.
BT have secured the live broadcast rights to 38 Premier League matches a season from 2013-14, paying £246 million ($394 million) per season, and will now be able to make use of high-speed cables built into the media centre used by television companies during the Olympics.
Ian Livingston, BT chief executive, said: “BT is leading the way to secure the Olympic sporting legacy for the community. We see this as a natural continuation of our role as official communications services partner for London 2012.”
