Gymnast Louis Smith was crowed the champion of BBC television’s “Strictly Come Dancing” on Saturday, winning the show’s glitterball trophy.
Smith topped the public vote ahead of Girls Aloud singer Kimberley Walsh and actresses Denise van Outen and Dani Harmer.
The 23-year-old from Peterborough won a silver medal at the London 2012 Olympics on the pommel horse.
And he could not hide his delight at winning the “Strictly Come Dancing” final.
Asked how it compared with the London Games, he said: “They are both very different, but I can finally say I’ve won something in the year 2012.”
Wearing skin-tight leggins for a showdance with professional partner Flavia Cacace, he earned a quartet of perfect 10s from the four judges after lifting his partner high above his head and performing a handstand on top of a giant globe.
Judge Darcey Bussell told him: “You blew me away. That had grace, it had fluidity. It was sensual as well.”
Fellow judge Len Goodman added: “If this show goes on for another 20 years I don’t think we’ll ever see a showdance that was as magical as that.”
