Taiwanese flat-panel maker AU Optronics Corp said Wednesday it returned to profit in the three months to June, ending losses for 10 consecutive quarters, due to strong demand for high-priced TV screens.
Net profit was Tw$3.98 billion ($131 million) on revenue of Tw$112.3 billion, the company said in a statement. It recorded a loss of Tw$12.71 billion a year earlier.
“Looking back on the second quarter, both AUO’s operating profit and net profit made significant improvements and came back to profitability,” the company said.
Like its major South Korean competitor Samsung, AU Optronics has made a series of investments in China, including a three-billion-dollar plan to build a flat-panel plant in the eastern city of Kunshan.
The firm has also diversified into the solar sector, spending $350 million for a 50 percent stake in a joint venture with US-based SunPower to build a solar cell plant in Malaysia.
