US cinema hearing delayed as father shouts at suspect

The father of one of the victims of the Colorado theater massacre shouted “rot in hell!” at the suspected gunman on Friday, shortly after the judge delayed a hearing to formally charge him.

Judge William Sylvester ordered on Thursday that James Holmes, 25, face trial over the shooting last July in Aurora, which killed 12 people and injured at least 58 others.

Holmes was scheduled to be arraigned, or formally charged, Friday morning, but his defense lawyers objected, and the judge postponed the hearing until March 12.

A short time later, one of the relatives in court, Steve Hernandez — father of Rebecca Wingo — shouted “Rot in hell, Holmes!” He was immediately taken out of the court by guards.

After the court settled, he returned, and apologized. The judge then told him: “I’m sorry for your loss. Do I need to be concerned about you?” to which Hernandez replied no.

Holmes is accused over the July 20 shooting at a midnight screening of the latest Batman movie in a theater in Aurora, Colorado, which revived America’s perennial debate about gun control.

Witnesses said Holmes threw smoke bomb-type devices before opening fire randomly with weapons including an AR-15 military-style rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun and a .40-caliber pistol.
