The US state of Maryland approved the legalization of gay marriage on Tuesday, television networks forecast, while Maine also appeared set to back the socially divisive move.
With 93 percent of votes counted in Maryland, 52 percent backed same-sex marriage with 48 percent against, according to CNN and NBC, while in Maine, CNN reported 54 percent in favor and 46 against, with 50 percent of votes counted.
