Al Gore, who lost the 2000 presidential election when Florida was called for his Republican rival, said Tuesday he was confident that fellow Democrat Barack Obama would win the critical state.
“I am confident in saying that President Obama is going to carry the state of Florida tonight,” Gore tweeted.
Republican Mitt Romney needs to win in Florida in order to earn enough electoral votes to clinch the White House, but Obama could win still the presidency if he secures a victory in other swing states.
As of 0400 GMT Wednesday, Obama had a razor-thin margin of victory over his Republican challenger in Florida, with most of the votes in the conservative part of the state counted and votes still being tallied from Democratic-leaning urban areas.
Gore won the US popular vote, but lost Florida and its key electoral votes — and thus the 2000 election — by 537 votes to then-Texas governor George W. Bush.
