US President Barack Obama says that the US government has “bigger fish to fry” than chasing marijuana smokers in Washington and Colorado, which legalized recreational use of the drug.
“It would not make sense for us to see a top priority as going after recreational users in states that have determined that it’s legal,” Obama told ABC News.
“We’ve got bigger fish to fry.”
The moves by Colorado and Washington to legalize marijuana for recreational use fly in the face of federal laws which still ban the practice.
A growing number of Americans favor legalizing cannabis. A Quinnipiac University poll last week said 51 percent favored legalization, with 44 percent against.
