Relatives of some of the 31 victims of the 1987 King’s Cross Underground fire on Sunday gathered at the London station to mark the 25th anniversary.
Fire engulfed the station’s ticket hall on November 18, 1987, after a wooden escalator went up in flames. A dropped match is believed to have ignited material under the moving staircase.
The Blessed Sacrament church near the station conducted a remembrance Mass.
Sophie Tarassenko, whose brother Ivan, 25, died in the fire, said that “the overwhelming emotion is still sadness”.
On laying flowers at the station’s memorial, Tarassenko urged today’s Underground workers and management to “have it uppermost in their minds that it never happens again”.
