Beaten US Open quarter-finalist David Ferrer revealed Wednesday that he had negotiated his way through the tournament without long-time coach Javier Piles, who returned to Spain following his father’s death.
Piles, who has worked with the world number four for 13 years, left New York after Ferrer had beaten Australia’s Nick Kyrgios in the first round.
But the 31-year-old Spaniard refused to blame his quarter-final loss to Frenchman Richard Gasquet on not having Piles at his side.
“It happened last week. I have my physio and my manager, Albert Molina, so I have the support of them,” said Ferrer, beaten 6-3, 6-1, 4-6, 2-6, 6-3 by Gasquet.
“But I talked with Javier every day.”
