The USA will be without three suspended players, including striker Jozy Altidore, for their FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Mexico on Tuesday.
Key midfielder Michael Bradley has also been ruled out against Mexico because of a sprained left ankle.
Bradley suffered the ankle sprain in the warm-up prior to Friday’s 3-1 loss to Costa Rica and watched the game from the sidelines.
Bradley, who plays midfield for Roma in the Italian Serie A league, is the Americans’ top midfielder, while Altidore has scored 20 international goals since joining the national team in 2007.
Altidore, Matt Besler and Geoff Cameron were each slapped with one-game bans after being given yellow card penalties in the Costa Rica loss.
To make up for the loss of Bradley, Altidore and the two others, the USA added midfielder Joe Corona, midfielder Brad Davis, defender Clarence Goodson and midfielder Jose Torres to their roster for the game in Columbus, Ohio.
Defender John Brooks will also not play after his release Saturday.
Mexico suffered a shock 2-1 loss Friday to Honduras and now find themselves in the position of heading into Tuesday’s contest without manager Jose Manuel “Chepo” de la Torre.
De la Torre was sacked after the Honduras loss.
Assistant coach Luis Fernando Tena will take over the managing duties.
Costa Rica is at the top of the six-nation final qualifying group in North and Central America and the Caribbean (CONCACAF) after a convincing win that ended the Americans’ 12-match winning streak.
Mexico are now just one point in front of fifth-place Panama in the qualifying standings.
