Argentine international goalkeeper Sergio Romero will join Ligue 1 club Monaco on a season-long loan from Sampdoria of Italy, the two clubs announced on Saturday.
Monaco confirmed that they had an option to make Romero’s loan into a permanent transfer at the end of the season.
Romero, who along with the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Mario Balotelli is a client of well-known Italian agent Mino Raiola, will contest the number-one spot in the principality with Croatian international Danijel Subasic.
The 26-year-old Romero played for Argentina at the 2010 World Cup and has won a total of 39 caps for his country.
He becomes Monaco’s 12th summer signing. Backed by Russian billionaire owner Dimitri Rybolovlev, they have already spent in the region of 150 million euros (US$200m) to bring in the likes of Radamel Falcao, James Rodriguez, Joao Moutinho, Eric Abidal and Jeremy Toulalan.
