US Secretary of State John Kerry spoke over the weekend with new Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, vowing the two countries would continue cooperation, a top US official said Monday.
But there was no immediate announcement of any visits by Kerry to Pakistan in the coming weeks, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.
Kerry said on Sunday that “he looks forward to working with the prime minister and his government as we continue our cooperation and support of a more stable, secure and prosperous future for Pakistan and the region,” she added.
“They discussed how they share a strong commitment to further consolidate and strengthen relations between our two countries.”
Pakistan has announced that Kerry would be visiting Islamabad in the last week of June.
The State Department has not yet officially announced the trip, which would make Kerry the most senior US official to visit the country since Sharif was sworn in as Pakistani prime minister after May elections.
“The secretary has said, and I’ve said on his behalf, he is very much looking forward to traveling to Pakistan,” Psaki said, without providing further details.
