A man appeared in court Tuesday charged with the murder of Georgia Williams as police confirmed that the Shropshire teenager’s body had been found.
Post-mortem results revealed that the 17-year-old, who went missing from her home in Wellington more than a week ago, died from “pressure being applied to her neck”, police said.
Jamie Reynolds, also of Wellington, was remanded in custody after appearing at Stafford Crown Court via video link from prison.
During the brief hearing he spoke only to give his name and confirm that he understood proceedings.
Reynolds, who was arrested in Glasgow last Wednesday, was charged Friday with murder after police discovered a body in woodland near Wrexham.
West Mercia Police confirmed Tuesday that the body was that of Georgia, who disappeared from her home in Wellington on May 26, sparking a police investigation.
Superintendent Adrian McGee said: “I can now confirm that the body found in woodland near Wrexham on Friday afternoon has been formally identified as that of 17-year-old Georgia Williams.
“Although we are not in a position to release any further details for legal reasons, and out of respect for the Williams family at this terribly sad time, I am also able to confirm that Georgia died as a result of pressure being applied to her neck.”
Police renewed their appeal for information to trace missing items belonging to Georgia, including a bag, make-up bag, mobile phone and clothing.
“If anyone believes they still have information that could aid our investigation I would like to ask that they share it with us as soon as they can, even if they are unsure whether the information is related to this case,” added McGee.
Reynolds is due to reappear at the same court on September 6.
