Spain-bound plane evacuated in Glasgow

A passenger jet heading for Spain had to be evacuated at Glasgow airport on Friday just before it was about to take off.

All 189 passengers and crew had to leave the Jet2 737 bound for Alicante via inflatable chutes at about 7:40 am (0640 GMT) after smoke was detected in the cabin.

Four people were taken to hospital with minor injuries, but no-one was believed to have been seriously hurt.

The evacuation forced flights at the airport to be halted for more than two hours.

“Until such time that we are able to clear the runway, we had to suspend flights to and from Glasgow Airport,” an airport spokesman said.

A Strathclyde police spokeswoman said passengers had been evacuated as a precaution.

“One elderly woman sustained a minor injury leaving the plane,” she added.

A statement from Jet2 said: “The aircraft was forced to curtail take-off due to smoke in the cabin.”
