Police have said they will press charges against a group of 60 fans from Bundesliga club Schalke 04 who held up Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt by lighting flares.
The start of the second-half was delayed by referee Guenter Perl after the fans lit around 25 flares during the half-time break which filled Gelsenkirchen’s Veltins Arena with smoke.
“It was a sad situation, we have taken the details of about 60 people and will press charges,” said a police spokesman.
“We video taped the incident, identified those involved and we intercepted them after the game.”
After the majority of Schalke fans loudly whistled and booed those who lit the flares, team manager Horst Heldt said: “Something like this has to be condemned. I think our fans gave the right answer.”
Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored for Schalke in the first-half before Stefan Aigner headed Frankfurt level just a minute later while Eintracht were later reduced to 10 men when Karim Matmour was sent off.
This is the second time this autumn Schalke fans have been involved in crowd trouble after more than 200 arrests were made at Dortmund on October 20 when groups of rival fans rioted.
