Police arrest man in preacher-murder case

Police said they had arrested a 21-year-old man on suspicion of the murder of grandfather Alan Greaves in Sheffield on Christmas Eve.

South Yorkshire police explained that the arrest followed an “excellent public response” to an appeal.

Lay preacher Greaves died from head injuries after being attacked close to his home as he made his way to church.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Following yesterday’s media appeal… and an excellent public response, a 21-year-old man from the High Green area of Sheffield has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of Alan Greaves.

“Inquiries are continuing and the investigation team wish to reiterate their appeal to the community of Sheffield to continue to come forward with information.”

Police last month arrested a man in his 20s and another in his 40s over the crime, but later released the pair on bail.

Greaves’s widow Maureen last month told the congregation of St Saviour’s Church in High Green, Sheffield, that she had cried over the “evil that has been done”.

“I have prayed constantly for Alan and I know you have too. I have not stopped crying for him and I know you have not stopped either.”
