Yankees' Rodriguez to have hip surgery

Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez is scheduled to undergo surgery on his left hip, more than three years after he had a similar procedure done on his right one, the team said.

The Major League Baseball club said the operation would likely keep him sidelined for the start of the 2013 season.

Rodriguez will need an arthroscopic procedure to repair a torn labrum and bone impingement. It is similar to the operation he had done on his right hip in March 2009.

Rodriguez had just three hits in 26 at-bats without an RBI in the post-season and was benched for the last two games of the American League Championship Series against Detroit, which the Yankees lost in a 4-0 sweep.
