Chargers tap McCoy as new coach

The San Diego Chargers Tuesday named Mike McCoy as their new head coach, hoping the former Denver Broncos offensive coordinator can improve the team’s NFL fortunes.

McCoy spent the past four seasons as the offensive coordinator for the Broncos, and was also an offensive assistant coach from 2000 through 2008 with the Carolina Panthers.

In San Diego he replaces Norv Turner, who was sacked a day after the Chargers completed a 7-9 season.

It was the team’s first losing record since 2003, but they didn’t make the playoffs in Turner’s last three seasons at the helm.

Denver’s season ended on Saturday with a 38-35 double-overtime loss to Baltimore in the second round of the American Conference Playoffs.

McCoy interviewed with the Chargers on Monday.

The Broncos were fourth overall in total offense this season, averaging 397.9 yards and ranking behind only the New England Patriots in points scored with 481.
