Derby City Council wants to bulldoze the Philpotts’ family home, The Sunday Telegraph reported, and let local residents decide what to do with the site.
The council is attempting to take legal possession of the three-bedroomed semi-detached house and the adjoining one.
“Who would want to live in a house where six children have died and why would you want to live next door to a house where six children have died?” council leader Paul Bayliss was quoted as saying.
“It is the council’s intention to bulldoze the properties but we need to go through a number of legal loopholes first,” said Bayliss.
Mick Philpott, 56, was imprisoned for life with a minimum term of 15 years, while his wife Mairead was also jailed for killing six of their offspring in a bungled house fire plot aimed at getting custody of five other children.
Mairead, 32, and their accomplice Paul Mosley were both sentenced to 17 years, of which they can expect to serve half in prison, in a case that has horrified Britain and sparked a national debate about welfare culture.
