Soldiers to give evidence in Iraq inquiry

Soldiers involved in a bloody battle during the Iraq War will on Monday give evidence in an inquiry called after it was claimed Iraqi detainees were unlawfully killed and mistreated.

Up to 200 military witnesses will testify before the Al-Sweady inquiry in London over the 2004 “Battle of Danny Boy”, named after a British checkpoint near the town of Majar al-Kabir in southern Iraq.

A three-hour fight broke out when insurgents ambushed soldiers manning the checkpoint.

The British army said that the bodies of some of those killed were taken to Camp Abu Naji and Shaibah Logistics Bases to see if they could identify whether any had been involved in the murder of six military policemen a year earlier.

The Iraqi complainants claim some fighters were taken alive and ill-treated or unlawfully killed at the bases but British soldiers deny the allegations.

The inquiry is expected to report back in 2014.
