Trial moved to June for infamous US mobster

Infamous Boston mobster James “Whitey” Bulger will go on trial for multiple murders in June next year, instead of March, a judge ruled Friday.

Federal Judge Richard Stearns changed the trial date shortly after Bulger, 83, was briefly hospitalized in Boston with reported chest pains. He was returned to prison in Plymouth, Massachusetts, to await trial.

Bulger, a former FBI informant accused of murdering 19 men and women, fled Boston in 1994 and was one of the FBI’s most wanted fugitives until captured last year in California.

The trial will begin June 6, with jury selection and opening arguments to start June 10, confirmed Christina Dilorio-Sterling, spokeswoman for US Attorney Carmen Ortiz.

Bulger is accused of murdering mob rivals, potential witnesses and others who threatened him. Prosecutors have also accused him of extortion, money laundering and running guns to Northern Ireland’s IRA militants.

Long-term girlfriend Catherine Greig, who was with Bulger during his years in hiding, was sentenced in June to eight years prison after pleading guilty to protecting the fugitive.
