Dozens of people were arrested as protesters and police clashed at a vigil over the recent police shooting of a New York City teenager, authorities said Thursday.
“There were 46 people arrested because of rioting” Wednesday night at the candlelight vigil in Brooklyn’s East Flatbush neighborhood, a police spokeswoman told AFP.
Two officers suffered minor injuries during the disturbances, which began when young men attacked a police car, according to the New York Times.
Saturday night, a 16-year-old identified as Kimani Gray was shot and killed by police after he brandished a gun at the officers, they said.
The autopsy on Wednesday revealed that Gray had been shot 11 times, including three times in the back — revelations that increased tensions among the already angry community.
There have been protests every night since Monday, with demonstrators accusing police of being overly violent in one of the most difficult areas of the city.
Last year, similar protests were sparked by the shooting of a 23-year-old by a narcotics detective, whom authorities said was trying to escape police in a stolen car.
