Hungarian, Polish clubs punished for racism

European football’s governing body UEFA on Friday punished Hungarian club Budapest Honved and Polish sides Lech Poznan and Piast Gliwice following recent cases of racism.

Honved have been ordered to play their next three European home game behind closed doors, with one game coming from the revocation of a suspended sanction against the club dating back to 2008.

In addition, they have been fined 50,000 euros ($65,814), with the punishment following “racist behaviour and racist chanting” by their fans in the Europa League second qualifying round tie against Vojvodina of Serbia, according to a UEFA statement.

Meanwhile, Lech Poznan were punished for “racist behaviour and display of a racist banner” at their Europa League third qualifying round, second leg, against Zalgiris of Lithuania last month.

UEFA have ordered the partial closure of Lech’s stadium, “in particular the stand containing the Polish side’s Ultras,” during their next European home match and also imposed a 5,000-euro fine.

Piast were punished for the same offence in their Europa League second qualifying round, second leg, against Qarabag.

As a result, they were also ordered to partially close their stadium in their next European home match and fined 5,000 euros.
