New York (AFP) – Former New Orleans Pelicans coach Monty Williams, who played in the NBA for nine seasons before retiring in 2003, was named Friday as vice president of basketball operations for the San Antonio Spurs.

Williams, who played for the Spurs from 1996 to 1998, was an assistant coach on the US gold medal basketball team at last month’s Rio Olympics. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich will guide the US national squad in the next four-year cycle to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Williams spent last season as associate coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder. His wife, Ingrid, died in February from injuries sustained in a car crash in Oklahoma City.

The Spurs also announced Brian Wright was the team’s new assistant general manager after spending the past two seasons in the same role with the NBA’s Detroit Pistons.

He spent the prior eight years in various roles with the Orlando Magic, overseeing college talent scouting in his final season with the team.
