PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 24 (UPI) — When looking for opinions from NFL stars, you are best suited to glance at their feet in pregame warm-ups.
That’s where some of the league’s best decide to convey political and personal messages, when they sport customized cleats.
Minnesota Vikings running back Jerick McKinnon offered a unique spin for his Sunday message before facing off against the Philadelphia Eagles. McKinnon decided to immortalize the late Cincinnati Zoo gorilla, Harambe. Zoo personnel shot the silverback in May after a child fell into the gorilla’s cage.
The Vikings tweeted a video last month before the team’s first game featuring its players mimicking the process of shoveling food into their mouths while shouting: “Spoons out for Harambe.”
McKinnon’s purple cleats featured photos of the gorilla and the words “RIP Harambe” printed in several locations. McKinnon, 24, had just 48 yards from scrimmage on 12 touches in the 21-10 loss.
