New York (AFP) – Baltimore Ravens tight end Darren Waller was suspended by the NFL on Friday for the first four games of the upcoming season for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy.
Waller will miss games without pay at home against Buffalo on September 11, at Cleveland on September 18, at Jacksonville on September 25 and at home against Oakland on October 2.
He will be eligible to return to the Ravens’ active roster on October 3 ahead of an October 9 home game against Washington, if the Ravens want him on the roster.
Waller played in six games last season and made two catches for 18 yards as a receiver and three tackles on kick team units before a hamstring injury ended his season after seven games.
He was shifting positions this season to tight end and can still take part in pre-season games and workouts.
Another Ravens tight end, Nick Boyle, who was also a rookie last season, is serving a 10-game ban to open the season after a repeat violation of the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy.
The Ravens went 5-11 last season and missed the playoffs.
