A student at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse submitted a complaint to the school’s “Hate Response Team” over a Harry Potter mural on campus that the student claimed perpetuated  “white, cis, man power.”

The complaint was over a campus mural that depicted the transformation of actor Matthew Lewis who portrayed Neville Longbottom in the film series. After playing the awkward Longbottom character in the Harry Potter films, Lewis turned heads when he landed a modelling gig in 2015.

The student complained that the mural perpetuates “white power. Man power. Cis power. Able power. Class power. ECT [sic] ect” by further establishing a societal male beauty standard. The student claimed that the mural “represents our ideal society,” and that it is everything that he or she is “trying to fight against.”

The student explicitly stated in the complaint that the mural caused anger and grief. “I am angry that I know the people who put this mural up, and I am anger [sic] because I know the people who let this mural be put up. Like I said earlier, maybe I am being a little sensitive, but it is how I feel. This represents, to me, our society, and I do not want it up on this wall. Why do we need a BEFORE and AFTER?”
