A woman who posted to her Facebook page that she had been sexually assaulted actually fabricated the story because she was “distraught over the recent election,” police confirmed.
Three days after the 2016 presidential election, the woman posted on Facebook that she had been sexually assaulted, according to FOX Q13.
The woman said in the post that she reported the sexual assault to the Kirkland Police Department, but law enforcement officials did nothing about the incident and did not file a report.
Kirkland Police investigated the incident for a week, eventually tracking the woman down at her work.
Soon after speaking with police, the woman admitted to fabricating the story because she was so upset with the results of the presidential election, according to Kirkland Police.
“The Kirkland Police Department has worked very hard to gain the trust and cooperation of the citizens of Kirkland and continues every day to build on this trust through transparency and accountability,” the police department said in statement.
“False reports such as this can cast doubt on an agencies reputation,” the department continued in a statement.
There is no indication thus far on whether the woman will be charged for falsifying a police report.
