On February 13–one day before the GOP-led Senate is expected to vote for a repeal of Barack Obama’s Social Security gun ban–the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence freaked out and called the ban a “lifesaving policy.”

They made this claim in an email which Breitbart News has in its possession.

The Brady Campaign warned supporters:

You still have time to take action! The Senate is expected to vote tomorrow on whether to roll back a rule that keeps guns out of the hands of people who are a danger to themselves or others. This is our last chance to stop them from ending this lifesaving policy!

In reality, Obama’s gun ban was aimed at people who needed help managing their finances and it was designed in such a way that flagged Social Security beneficiaries who had their check sent to a money manager. Those beneficiaries could then be investigated by the Social Security Administration and reported to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) as mentally incompetent to own a gun.

Duke University professor Jeffrey Swanson warned this ban not only led to violations of Due Process rights but also targeted a “vulnerable” group who posed no real threat to the safety of other Americans.

Yet the Brady Campaign used their email to intimate that the Senate is actually working hand-in-hand with the “gun lobby” to repeal portions of background checks for retail sales. The email said, “Don’t let the gun lobby’s influence roll-back life-saving measures of the Brady background checks that protect all Americans.”

On February 9 the Brady Campaign sent an email to supporters, warning that Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the NRA represent a deadly affront to gun control.
