The head of Planned Parenthood defended herself and her organization Tuesday against intense scrutiny on Capitol Hill, where congressional lawmakers used a committee hearing to question her about her salary, the organization’s spending and where federal funding to the organization goes.

In his opening statement, Rep. Jason Chaffetz, a Utah Republican and chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards receives a salary of $600,000. A memo from Chaffetz to committee members released ahead of the hearing also accused the organization of exorbitant travel costs and lavish parties, aiming to raise questions about whether federal funds should continue to go toward medical services Planned Parenthood provides.

The memo additionally specified that Richards was paid $590,928 in 2013. She told committee members during the hearing her annual compensation is $520,000.
