Early Thursday morning, a father reacted to the sound of breaking glass by hiding his family, retrieving his handgun, and shooting the suspected intruder.

The incident occurred in Shoreline, Washington, around 2:50 a.m.

According to KOMO News, a father, mother, and their two daughters were in the house asleep when they heard the sound of breaking glass. The father shifted everyone to the back of the house, and his 19-year-old daughter called 911 while he grabbed his 9mm handgun and went to investigate.

Sgt. Jason Houck of the King County Sheriff’s Office said the daughter reported “a shirtless man kicking at their doors.”

When the father confronted him, the man allegedly charged and two shots were fired. One of the shots struck the suspect in the thigh and caused significant bleeding. Responding officers used a “tourniquet to stop or at least slow the bleeding until medics could get to the scene and take the [41-year-old] suspect to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he was rushed into surgery and is expected to survive.”

The family of four was uninjured.
