During a 7:50 a.m. press conference, Dallas Police Chief David Brown described a July 7 sniper as a “coward” who was focused on “killing white officers.”
Twelve police officers were ambushed and shot during a Black Lives Matter protest. Five of those officers were killed.
According to Fox News Channel, Brown said he and his men would not be cowered into watching Americans lose their First Amendment rights to assemble and petition because of this attack. He said, “Police officers are guardians of this great democracy. The freedom to protest, the freedom of speech, the freedom for expression [are] all freedoms that we fight for with our lives.”
He said police officers “risk [their] lives for those rights.”
Brown then responded to reporters’ questions about the sniper’s motivations by saying, “He wanted to kill officers, and he expressed killing white people. He expressed killing white officers. He expressed anger for Black Lives Matter. None of that makes sense. None of that is a reason–or a legitimate reason–to do harm to anyone.”
Brown said these were the things the sniper actually “said to negotiators.”
