'Milk' Scribe: 'Ender's Game' Boycott a Waste of Energy

Dustin Lance Black, the gay screenwriter who won an Oscar for the film Milk, is an unabashed advocate for same-sex marriage. Yet Black isn’t on board with potential boycotts regarding the upcoming sci-fi feature Ender’s Game.

The film is based on the book by Orson Scott Card, an author with strong views against gay marriage. That fact has inspired outrage against the film, including an official boycott of all things Ender’s Game from a group dubbed Geeks OUT.

Black suggests there are better ways to advance the cause of gay rights.

There’s so much good to be done right now,” Black wrote on his Facebook page Saturday. “Boycotting a movie made by 99% lgbt equality folks in an lgbt equality industry is a waste of our collective energy. Making one phone call to a relative in the south who isn’t quite there yet would be 1000 times more effective.
