Cruz Reads Green Eggs & Ham on Senate Floor

On Tuesday night, as Senator Ted Cruz (R – TX) continued his quasi-filibuster regarding Obamacare, he began reading the Dr. Seuss classic “Green Eggs and Ham” after reading Bible verses for his two daughters on the floor of the Senate. He said he wanted to read them to bed from the floor of the Senate. He compared the main character’s refusal to eat green eggs and ham to the American public’s refusal of Obamacare.

Cruz was already one hour into his symbolic filibuster of a continuing resolution that would defund Obamacare when he recalled how his how his father had been a cook at the Toddle House chain. His father would entertain young Cruz by flipping pancakes in front of him, Cruz said. Cruz took time to talk about the time he spent with his father when he was a child.

“I will credit my father, he invented…green eggs and ham. He did it two ways. The easy way was he would put green food coloring in. ‘Green eggs and ham’ was my favorite book as a little boy. You can actually do it- the food coloring is a little bit cheating. But if you take spinach and mix it into the eggs, the eggs turn green.”
