Janet Napolitano: ‘Arizona ‘Definitely In Play’

Wednesday on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” the former Obama administration Secretary of Homeland Security and formerGov. Janet Napolitano (D-AZ) said the normally red state of Arizona was “definitely in play” in this year’s presidential election between Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

Partial transcript as follows:

MITCHELL: Do you think Arizona is in play for the democrats this year?

NAPOLITANO: I think Arizona is definitely in play. The numbers are close. They bounce around a little poll to poll. Early voting is very high there. Early voting among Democrats is running higher than it did in 2012. For the first time they have opened a polling place at Arizona State University, home to thousands of students. So they really don’t fall in the, quote, likely voter category, that the Monmouth poll picks up. There is a sheriff’s race in the state’s largest county with Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the infamous sheriff who has been indicted on grounds of racial profiling. He’s a long-time office holder. That will drive up the Latino vote. Lots going on in Arizona.
