Hickenlooper: Leave Pot Legalization Up to the States

Thursday on CNN, 2020 Democrat presidential candidate and former Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper discussed marijuana, saying its legalization should be left up to each state to decide on.

Hickenlooper compared it to prohibition and noted that some counties around the country still do not allow the sale of liquor.

“The federal government should delist [pot] from the schedule one narcotics so we can do testing on it. We should get the FDA to look at really making sure that we’re treating it as a — or measuring it and testing it as a narcotic, as a medicine that can help people,” Hickenlooper said on CNN’s “New Day.”

He continued, Then the second thing you should do is make sure the Department of Agriculture is making sure what pesticides — you know, are we doing anything that could be harmful to people? And then let states one by one decide what they want. Sort of what we did when we repealed prohibition, the government didn’t say alcohol will be available for everyone. The federal government said states can choose. certain states even to this day, some counties in Texas or Oklahoma are still dry counties. You can’t get liquor there.”
