Dem Rep. Porter: ‘Substantial Evidence’ Trump ‘Broke the Law’

Tuesday on CNN’s “Cuomo Prime Time,” Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA) called for opening an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump.

Porter said, “This is for me really about taking the time to wait for Special counsel Mueller to do his investigation, to issue his report, and then to have the opportunity to read the report and study the Constitution, to talk with colleagues, and have done all of that I’ve come to the conclusion that based on the facts in the Mueller report which are that President Trump engaged in at least four acts of obstruction of justice and there’s substantial evidence that he engaged in those four acts. I felt like it’s appropriate to begin an impeachment inquiry.”

She added, “I think it’s important that when we have substantial evidence from the special counsel that the president of the United States broke the law four times, four counts of obstruction of justice, and then that president at each and every turn has continued to obstruct Congress’ oversight, that for me was a very important factor. So because he’s not — he’s directed people not to appear, we have subpoenas that have been ignored. We’ve had to hold people in contempt. And so this continued pattern is very troubling. I think it’s important that the president understands that these are series charges, that the evidence against him is substantial, and that we are serious about doing our duty to the Constitution and the American people.”
