Daily Call Sheet: Friday's 'Friday' News, Nic Cage Rules, Meryl an Oscar Shoo-In?

NEW LINE CINEMA AND ICE CUBE WANT TO MAKE ANOTHER ‘FRIDAY’ FILM

If this comes together we will have four “Friday” films and while I’m not advocating for a return to the well after almost a decade, I am a huge fan of the original trilogy: “Friday” (1995), “Next Friday” (2000), and “Friday After Next” (2002). What all three accomplish beautifully is aiming for a target and hitting it.

One of the things I most appreciate about producer/star Ice Cube’s brainchild is how he wisely sets each chapter in a new location, which went a long way to help the concept from getting tired. The first is in Compton, the second in the suburbs, and the third mostly takes place at a Los Angeles strip mall during the Christmas season. Another decision that saved the franchise was replacing the hilarious Chris Tucker — who chose not to do the sequels — with Mike Epps, who stepped up beautifully. And John Witherspoon slays me every time he opens his mouth.

There’s an easygoing vibe to these films, a surprisingly old-fashioned theme and moral, and like too many comedies today, they’re not over-the-top with all that raunchy, disgusting non-humor. Don’t get me wrong, they’re R-rated and not for kids, but there are worse ways to spend a Sunday afternoon than with a “Friday” marathon.

FOR NO PARTICULAR REASON, A LOOK BACK AT THE JOE PISCOPO/TREAT WILLIAMS ZOMBIE FLICK ‘DEAD HEAT

I was really hoping to forget this movie ever existed; this and ‘Beastmaster 2.’

FIVE ONCE-PROMISING ACTORS AND THE FRANCHISES THAT RUINED THEM

Intelligent list.

BRETT BUTLER WAS HOMELESS AFTER ‘GRACE UNDER FIRE’

I remember liking that show:

Actress Brett Butler hit rock bottom after her hit sitcom Grace Under Fire wrapped – she ended up living on the streets fighting a drug addiction. …

Butler now regrets her demanding behaviour at the height of her fame and hopes her former colleagues and staff will forgive her.

She recalls, “(I would make) someone’s day miserable over the choice of a word in a 22-minute show. A lot of times, I’d be an a** and didn’t even think I was …

Butler is now plotting a showbiz comeback as she returns to stand-up comedy and develops a reality show about her psychic abilities.

Her psychic abilities didn’t alert drugs ruin lives?

Here’s a recent photo.

PETE HAMMOND: JUST GIVE MERYL STREEP THE OSCAR NOW

DHD:

Her unbelievable 17th Oscar nomination is assured and perhaps the only thing standing between her and a third Oscar is well, Streep herself. The problem is everyone expects her to be brilliant and we almost take it for granted that she will deliver. The other problem is that most recent Oscars in this category have gone to younger contenders — some call it the “babe factor” that appeals particularly to older male Academy members.

How would you like to be an actress who stars in a piece of Oscar-bait that hasn’t yet been released and read that? Could the only thing standing between Streep and another Oscar be, say, someone who gave a better performance?

If Hammond’s already seen everything, which is a possibility, I take it all back. He’s also one of the few good guys in the entertainment media.

THE WEEKEND’S ALMOST HERE AND GUESS WHAT I JUST GOT ON BLU-RAY…

This.

Oh baby.

I now have seven of my ten most re-watchable films on Blu-ray: “Goodfellas,” “Casino,” “The Searchers,” “Cool Hand Luke,” “Dog Day Afternoon,” “Apocalypse Now,” and “Scarface.” All that’s left is “Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo,” “Rio Bravo,” and “Once Upon a Time In the West.”

IN DEFENSE OF NICOLAS CAGE: METHOD IN THE MADNESS

I’m a huge Nic Cage fan. He’s masculine, he’ll make Christianthemed and openly patriotic films, and at the very least tries to be interesting in every role. He doesn’t always succeed and he does star in a lot of junk, but I’ll give anything he’s in a try because critics don’t know shit and every once in a while you’ll find something magnificent.

LAST NIGHT’S SCREENING

Wicked Attractions: I’m a true crime addict but unwilling to pay another $900 a month or whatever it is to up my Dish plan to include the Investigative Discovery channel. Thankfully, the first two seasons of this terrific show have been found on Netflix Streaming.

The conceit here is that there are two killers involved in each crime, or series of crimes, and the belief is that one or both wouldn’t have been capable of their heinousness without the other.

The first few episodes were a little too salacious for my taste, but the producers quickly eased back on the sexually graphic details in order to focus more on the details behind the investigation that eventually catches the duo and the crimes themselves. Good stuff.

These are also the type of crimes that frighten me most because they’re so random. Many of the victims are just normal, everyday Americans going on about their lives and not the usual murder victims who were in some way involved with their killer. And who knew there were so many serial killers in the country.

Best of all, these are good vs. evil stories. You can’t watch what these awful people do to the innocent and not believe in evil. But it’s the dedication of law enforcement that’s inspiring. In an episode I watched just the other day, one of them said: “When you’re a detective you want nothing more than what’s known as a ‘career case.’ And then after you have one, you don’t ever want another.”
