College Rape Suspect Tells Police He Was Acting Out Scene from ’50 Shades of Grey’

A 19-year-old college student accused of raping a classmate reportedly told police he was recreating a scene from the film 50 Shades of Grey.

Mohammad Hossain, a freshman at the University of Illinois at Chicago, was arrested Saturday night and charged with felony aggravated criminal sexual assault after he allegedly used a belt to restrain and whip a woman before raping her, reports the Chicago Tribune.

Hossain and the woman went to Hossain’s dorm room Saturday evening around 5:30 p.m., according to Assistant State’s Attorney Sarah Karr. Once there, Hossain asked the woman to remove her clothes, and she complied.

Hossain then allegedly used a belt to tie the woman’s hands and feet to the bed and stuffed a necktie in her mouth, then proceeded to whip her with another belt. The arrest report indicates that at one point, Hossain used his fists to strike the woman.

According to DNAinfo, the woman allegedly repeatedly told Hossain “stop,” “no,” and “you’re hurting me.” The woman was reportedly able to eventually free her hands from the constraints, but Hossain then allegedly held her hands behind her back and proceeded to sexually assault her.

When Hossain’s roommate returned to the dorm, Hossain allegedly held the door shut to prevent him from entering. When the woman was able to leave, she told a friend what happened and then contacted police.

Hossain was arrested later that night, according to the Tribune.

Assistant Cook County public defender Sandra Bennewitz reportedly told Judge Adam Bourgeois at a bail hearing that Hossain is  a bio-nuclear engineering major, a student leader at UIC, a member of the triathlon team, and a student ambassador to the alumni association.

“Sandra, how can someone involved in all that let a movie persuade him to do something like this?” the judge asked Hossain’s attorney.

“He would say that it was consensual,” Bennewitz replied, according to the Tribune.

Hossain’s bail was set at $500,000. According to DNAinfo, he is not allowed back on UIC campus and must consent to electronic monitoring if he posts bail.
