Watch: Iraq War Soldier Forms Unbreakable Bond with K9 Companion in ‘Megan Leavey’ Trailer

Distributor Bleecker Street unveiled the first trailer for its true story-based military drama Megan Leavey on Wednesday.

Leavey tells the story of the Iraq war soldier of the same name, Megan Leavey (Kate Mara), who is tasked with training an “aggressive” K9 German Shepherd named Rex to help out on missions in Iraq.

Leavey bonds with the dog through dozens of missions in the war-torn country, and even credits Rex with saving her life.

When both soldiers are injured in a roadside bombing incident in 2006, Leavey returns home while Rex is put back into service; the film then follows Leavey’s attempt to have Rex discharged into her care.

Gabriela Cowperthwaite (Blackfish) directs off of a script from Pamela Gray, Annie Mumolo and Tim Lovestedt. Bradley Whitford, Common, Edie Falco and Tom Felton co-star.

Megan Leavey is in theaters June 9.
