GOP Defunds Effort to Force California, Other Borders States to Report Long Gun Sales

On May 8 the House Appropriations Committee endorsed a GOP proposal to withhold funding for the Obama administration’s requirement that gun stores in California and other border states file special documentation on multiple long gun sales.

The proposal to withhold funding was put forth by Representative John Carter (R-TX) and it passed by a vote of 29-18.

According to Roll Call, Carter’s “proposal aims to stymie an Obama administration requirement that gun dealers in Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Texas notify the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) when they sell two or more of certain high-powered long guns to the same buyer within five days.”

Rep. Adam B. Schiff (D-CA) supported the long gun reporting requirement and described it as something “prudent” Congress could do to counter straw purchasers.

The reporting requirement was put in place because of the approximately 2,500 guns sold to straw purchasers and carried illegally into Mexico during the heyday of the ATF’s Operation Fast and Furious.
