1,900-Pound ‘Death Star’ Under Construction at Legoland

Someone call the Knights of the Old Republic; a new Death Star is currently under construction in Carlsbad, California.

Sure, the new Death Star is made out of Lego. But at roughly 500,000 pieces and 1,900 pounds, the Lego Death Star’s construction may be as impressive a feat as the destruction of the original back in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Appropriately enough, the all-Lego Death Star will be unveiled on March 5 at Legoland California. The model is 13 feet high and 8 feet wide, and needs a steel infrastructure to hold up its weight, according to a press release from Legoland. “The new model is the centerpiece of a new display which features the now famous trench run scene from Star Wars,” the park said in a statement. “Below the Death Star, guests are invited to use their imaginations to construct their own starships at building stations from the eponymous plastic interlocking bricks, while LEGO X-Wings, TIE Fighters, and Y-Wings circle overhead.” The Death Star joins a host of other Lego-inspired creations in the park’s Star Wars miniland, where visitors can see Lego-constructed recreations of scenes from the movies, as well as Lego versions of characters from the series like Princess Leia and Yoda.
