San Francisco police officer Thomas Abramhamsen surrendered Tuesday on charges of building and possessing his own “assault rifle.”

Charges for both violations are felonies.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Abrahamsen is 50-years-old and is “an 18-year veteran” of the San Francisco Police Department. He came under suspicion in the summer of 2015 after officials in the department were “tipped off.” An investigation was launched and the department now alleges that Abramhamsen “manufactured and owned a prohibited assault rifle along with [an] AR-15 receiver component.”

SFPD Internal Affairs Division “has given a report on the investigation to the district attorney’s office.”

Acting Police Chief Toney Chaplin said, “Department members will continue to hold each other accountable and will act swiftly to report any behavior that might bring dishonor to the Police Department.”
