A government-funded cinema and gallery in Liverpool is now hosting Shia LaBeouf’s anti-Donald Trump art installation, which was closed down for political violence in its original location.
Located in Liverpool’s city centre, FACT is part of the government-funded Arts Council England’s National Portfolio, and Liverpool City Council’s Culture Liverpool Investment Programme.
“He Will Not Divide Us” was conceived as a four-year long project against President Donald J. Trump which would have been based in New York and run the length of his presidency. But the Museum of the Moving Image shut it down after the site became a magnet for partisan political violence.
“Events have shown that America is simply not safe enough for this artwork to exist,” wrote the Hollywood actor, Luke Turner, and Nastja Rönko, the ‘artists’ behind “He Will Not Divide Us” in a press release.
Liverpool is the fourth location for the embattled exhibition, which consists of the continuous live streaming of a flag emblazoned with the words “HE WILL NOT DIVIDE US”.
LaBeouf’s project was moved from a ‘secret location’ in the U.S. earlier this month after internet sleuths tracked down the exhibit and replaced the white flag on the online live stream with a pro-Trump t-shirt and MAGA (“Make America Great Again”) hat.
According to Liverpool City Council, “political activity” is not eligible to be part of its Culture Liverpool Investment Programme, but FACT’s website entry for “He Will Not Divide Us” admits that the project has an “inherently political nature and intent”.
The organisation, whose article on the installation claims the world is “increasingly governed by ‘post-truth’ politics”, states that it will be hosting LaBeouf’s flag for the next four years.
But plans are already underway by protesters to disrupt the exhibit, with posters at online ‘chan’ boards suggesting the flag can be paint bombed, or cut down with drones.
