Marines To Deploy Unmanned Helos To Afghanistan

The Marines are sending the first of two Lockheed Martin K-MAX unmanned helos to Afghanistan. They are going to be used to resupply front-line troops. The hope is they will reduce the number of convoys and thereby limit the effectiveness of IEDs.

The birds have been tested at the Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona and include a unique design: a counter-rotating dual rotor design eliminates the need for a tail rotor. It can lift 6,000 pounds, which is nearly its entire weight. In will spend 6 months in theater.
